Hello everyone, this is just a quick update to let you know about our Group icon, which we changed about a month ago. It's based on a magnificent Deviation by one of our members, Coscomomo. He has made some amazing flying whales on different Deviations and I definitely recommend checking out his Gallery.

This piece is especially interesting, because you can flip it to the side and it looks like the whale jumps out of the water instead of flying through the clouds.

Our previous logo Logo for Flying-Cetaceans group by Jakeukalane was a nice animation by our admin extraordinaire Jakeukalane. All our previous and potential logos are collected in our Favourites :+fav:, which I try to expand every time I see a flying whale Deviation with a Creative Commons license.

The wind fish from Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Don't let it discourage you! Your whale is awesome.

You know, with traditional art, it is often a matter of presenting it correctly in the digital world. When taking a photo, it's hard to get the saturation and light and intensity right. There are a couple of things you can try, though. One is lighting. I found that a natural light source (i.e. daylight) works pretty well. Another one is aligning the camera with the image. That includes framing, yes, but having the camera as parallel to the image as possible might be even more important, because you can always crop later. Also make sure that the medium lies flat, otherwise the light isn't distributed as regularly. Finally, there's a bunch of editing you can do. Light and contrast is one thing, but I'd be careful with that, because it's easy to over-correct a coloured image. I usually take some of the automatic filters in my image editing program, such as auto white balance or equalise. And my favourite thing to do is to duplicate the image as a new layer and then playing around with the blend modes (and the layer opacity to make an effect more subtle).

I don't know if you can use any of this, but let me know if I can help you in any way!

Whoa, thanks for the advice! Yeah, this piece, in particular, has seen better days. It's bent up and too big to scan. XD I'll try taking pictures outside and doing the other things your mention when I get around to photographing my other works. Hopefully, that'll make the difference!
